Janet Cliffe

Janet Cliffe

Janet was born on 16th October 1939 to parents William and Winifred Leggott. After leaving school she went to work at Burrell’s farm, then the Royal Hotel in Scunthorpe.

Janet married Peter Cliffe in 1961 and went on to have children Andrew and Linda. In time there were grandchildren: Samantha, Naomi and Ruby; and great-grandchildren Emily, Joshua, Charlotte and Isabella. After Janet married, she did various jobs that fitted around the family. She worked on the land for Holmes; always working hard but also up for a laugh and a joke with the girls. She also worked at the Welcome Café Petrol Station. They bought the milk round, and she delivered milk to Owston Ferry and West Butterwick in all weathers for twenty-one years.

Janet retired at sixty, only to go back to work three weeks later, spending th next twelve years working in various residential homes. This was where she met some of her closest friends, Carol and Pauline.

Another close friend was Wendy Barnard, with whom she had gone to school. They used to spend their early years biking from Owston Ferry to Wroot, looking for lads. Another close friend was Mary. She always had plenty of friends.

For hobbies she enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles and playing the organ. Janet and Peter were well known in the White Hart playing in the darts and dominoes league for many years. Holidays were a big part of her life, with Greece and Scotland being particular favourites. Shopping was also a dedicated hobby as she loved clothes.

But Janet was at her happiest when surrounded by family, especially later in life after Peter died.
